Removing ballpoint ink: pick your surface
Ballpoint Ink is an oil-based ink stain, usually from a leaking pen in a pocket or a child with a biro. The chemistry stays the same wherever it lands — but the safe way to treat it changes completely with the surface, which is why each pairing below has its own guide.
Not water-soluble
Water alone will not touch this stain; it needs an absorbent, surfactant or solvent stage.
Heat sets it
Keep hot water, steam and dryers away until the ballpoint ink is fully out — heat fixes it permanently.
Fresh vs dried-in
Fresh ballpoint marks release surprisingly well into alcohol because the oily ink is still soft. Older marks harden as the ink resins cure, and each week the ink sits the more dabbing passes it takes.
