The suede-look synthetic that resists almost every stain — then rings from plain water. On most microfibre the counter-intuitive rule holds: alcohol is safer than water.

Microfibre is tightly woven polyester and behaves oddly: extremely stain-resistant, but water itself often marks it, leaving tide rings. Check the tag — most microfibre is S-code, which means clean with alcohol or solvent, not water. Rubbing alcohol flashes off before it can ring, which is why it is the microfibre cleaner of choice.

Safe cleaning methods

  • A soft brush to lift the nap once dry

Do and don’t

Do

  • Check the care tag first: S means alcohol or solvent, W means water-based is safe
  • Work in small areas and feather the edges so no tide mark forms
  • Brush the nap back up with a soft brush once fully dry

Don’t

  • Never flood microfibre with water — the tide ring can be harder to remove than the stain
  • Never use bleach or acetone, which damage polyester
  • Do not rub hard while wet; the nap crushes and shines

Drying

Alcohol-based cleaning is touch-dry in minutes. Water-based cleaning needs 1 to 2 hours; brush the nap as it dries.
