The catch-all covering — cotton, linen, polyester and blends. The cleaning method is dictated not by the stain but by the W, S, WS or X code on the sofa label, which is why the same spill needs different treatment on different sofas.

A fabric sofa is only cleanable by the rules on its own label. Find the care code on the platform tag: W means water-based cleaners only, S means solvent only, WS means either, X means vacuum only. Many modern covers blend in viscose, which watermarks badly, so always use minimal moisture and test a hidden panel first.

Safe cleaning methods

Do

  • Find and read the care-code tag before any liquid touches the fabric
  • Test every product on the back or under a cushion
  • Blot with white cloths so you can see what is transferring
  • Keep moisture to a minimum — damp covers dry slowly and can shrink

Don’t

  • Never soak a cushion or remove covers for a machine wash unless the label explicitly allows it
  • Never use bleach or strong alkalis on upholstery fabric
  • Never scrub velvet or pile fabrics — brush the pile back when nearly dry instead
